In the first part of “Reach for This, NOT That”, 5 commonly bought products were reviewed: eggs, butter, coffee, beef, and nut butter. The review included comparing the products most consumers buy to the healthier version of the similar product, and showing you how these two products are generally located right next to each other. The price differential between the two products, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t that much at all. Lets be real, if you would be willing to spend 5 bucks at the bar for a beer that’s value is highly inflated, then why not get more out of your money and spend an extra dollar on some quality cage-free eggs. This time around in “Reach for This, NOT That”, we are going to look at 5 different products, ranging from shampoos to the type of salt you use to season your foods. Shopping for healthier household items shouldn’t be a stressor in ones life and it definitely doesn’t have to break the bank.
1-Pink Himalayan Sea Salt VS Bleached White Salt: Pink Himalayan sea salt contains naturally accruing micro-nutrients such as zinc, selenium, and iodine while bleached white salt is processed/bleached and lacks these nutrients. Salting your food is a great thing to do, just make sure you are using the right type of salt. At Trader Joes you can get the pink Himalayan sea salt for the same price as the bleached white sea salt, only cost $1.99 for a bottle of it regardless if its bleached or not.
2-Wild Caught Fish VS Farm Raised Fish: Wild caught fish have more naturally occurring omega 3 fatty acids then farm raised fish. Farm raised fish also tend to have higher amounts of the harmful omega 6 fatty acids then wild caught fish do. Omega 3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory while omega 6 fatty acids are pro-inflammatory. So make sure you avoid consuming the harmful omega 6’s but try to consume plenty of the beneficial omega 3’s by eating wild caught fish. The price for wild caught tilapia ranges from around $13-$15 per pound while farm raised tilapia cost around $10-$12 per pound.
3-Raw Nuts VS Roasted Nuts: There are more healthful benefits from consuming raw nuts over roasted nuts. The healthful properties of nuts are diminished when the nuts are roasted. Nuts are known to help increase your heart function and decrease your risk for heart disease, so make sure you are eating the raw version of nuts to get all of the healthful benefits from them. For Blue Diamond almonds, there is no price differential between raw or “whole natural” as they like to call it, and roasted nuts. It cost the same which is $4.69 for a can of almonds regardless if they are roasted or not. So grab the RAW ones.
4-Fluoride-Free Toothpaste VS Fluoride Toothpaste: Using products that contain fluoride, such as toothpaste, will lead to problems with your thyroid. Having thyroid dysfunction will cause numerous health problems, and will also lead to a slower metabolism. It is best to find a fluoride-free toothpaste such as Burt’s Bees or Toms. You need to make sure it says fluoride-free on the bottle however because both of these brands still have products that will contain fluoride. A properly functioning thyroid is vital for achieving your body composition goals. Fluoride-free toothpaste cost $5-$7 for a tube while toothpaste with fluoride cost around $3-$5 for a tube.
5-Paraben Free Cosmetics VS Paraben Cosmetics: When shopping for lotions, shampoos, & body washes, make sure you search for the paraben free kind, which will normally be located right next to the cosmetics loaded with these harmful preservatives. Parabens are used in cosmetic products as preservatives but they have been shown to be linked to various types of cancer and are harmful to your body. Most of the time, the paraben free product will be sure to let you know somewhere on the front of their bottle that their product doesn’t contain any parabens. One of the most popular brands that is paraben free is Aveda, which is located in most malls. You can however find paraben free cosmetics, such as St. Ives, at your local grocery stores. The price differential for these products varies depending on the brand but for St.Ives it cost about $5 for a bottle of body wash while for Suave it cost around $3-$4 for a bottle.
Many consumers believe shopping for healthy groceries is a hard and expensive task. Although they may be partially correct, this tends to be an excuse that leads them to unhealthy choices. Pesticides, hormones, food dyes, MSG, sodium nitrates, and other harmful ingredients, can be found added into every day products. Some underlying health risks for ingesting these chemicals long term include numerous types of cancers and brain disorders. Body fat is even affected in a negative way from ingesting these harmful toxins. However, most of the time, located right next to the BAD product, you can find the healthier version of the same thing.
1-Organic Cage-Free Eggs VS Regular Eggs:
Micro nutrient content is higher in the cage free eggs versus the regular eggs. Cage free eggs range from $3-$5 per dozen while the regular eggs cost around $1-$2 per dozen.
2-Organic Butter VS Margarine:
Margarine is high in the harmful omega 6 fatty acids while organic butter contains more beneficial omega 3 fatty acids and CLA. Margarine cost around $2.5 for 4 sticks while organic butter cost $4 for the same amount.
3-Organic Coffee VS Non-Organic Coffee:
Coffee is one of the top 3 most pesticide sprayed crops in the world, so it is very important to buy organic coffee over non-organic so you can avoid these harmful toxins. Organic coffee cost around $10-$15 per lb. while non-organic coffee cost around $5¬-$8 for the same amount.
4-Grass Fed Beef VS Farmed Beef (Corn Fed):
Farmed beef tends to have added hormones and antibiotics to it while grass fed beef tends to not have it. 1 lb. of ground grass fed beef ranges from $6-$8 while ground corn fed beef ranges from $2-$5 per lb.
5-Almond Butter VS Peanut Butter:
Peanuts are one of the “Sensitive 7”, meaning they are one of the most allergenic foods people consume. If you have an allergy towards peanuts, eliminating them from your diet will cause less inflammation in your body. Almond butter is a good alternative to peanut butter. Almond butter cost $5-$6 for a jar while peanut butter cost $2-$4 per jar.
As you can see from these pictures, the five product choices are located right next to each other. So from a convenience stand point you won’t have to go out of your way to grab the healthier choice, its already right there next to the worse product you’re currently using. Also, the price differential between the good and bad is very minimal especially in the grand scheme of things, and the slight increase in price is definitely worth the added health benefits.
